Workplace Safety in Omaha

Omaha's industrial base still shows its stockyard and railroad roots. Greater Omaha Packing runs a large beef plant in South Omaha, Union Pacific is headquartered downtown at 1400 Douglas Street, and Kiewit, one of North America's largest construction and engineering companies, is based in the city. Each carries a different set of hazards: knives, ammonia refrigeration and wet floors on the packing side, moving equipment around rail, and falls, trenching and heavy lifts on construction sites.

Private employers in Nebraska are covered by federal OSHA, and Omaha inspections are handled by the Omaha Area Office on Regency Parkway Drive. Cross the Missouri River into Council Bluffs, though, and you are in Iowa, which runs its own OSHA-approved State Plan for private employers. Contractors and logistics companies with sites on both banks need to know which agency has jurisdiction at each address.

BHG Safety Partners is based in Hannibal, Missouri, and has no office in Omaha. We travel to your plant, yard or job site for training, inspections and program work, or run live virtual sessions when classroom material doesn't need to be taught on the floor. Onsite time then goes to what can't be done remotely: forklift evaluations, sanitation-shift observations and walkthroughs of your lockout points.

Omaha Industries We Support

  • Beef packing and meat processing

Greater Omaha Packing's South Omaha plant processes thousands of head of cattle a day, carrying on the neighborhood's packing history. Line and sanitation crews face knife cuts, repetitive-motion strain, slick floors, cold rooms and the release hazards of ammonia refrigeration systems.

  • Rail and rail-served freight

Union Pacific has operated in Omaha since the 1860s and runs its Harriman Dispatching Center here. Shippers and contractors working near track deal with struck-by risks, railcar loading and unloading, and lockout on conveyors and transload equipment.

  • Heavy civil and commercial construction

With Kiewit headquartered in the city, Omaha has a deep bench of construction firms and subcontractors. Crews need fall protection, excavation and silica controls, along with documented training that satisfies general contractor prequalification.

  • Warehousing and logistics

Select Greater Omaha lists logistics as a target industry, pointing to the metro's highway, rail and air freight access. Distribution and cold-storage buildings run on forklifts, dock plates and conveyors, so powered industrial truck training and dock procedures carry most of the load.

What Shapes Safety Work in Omaha

  • Council Bluffs and the rest of Pottawattamie County are in Iowa, which enforces its own State Plan for private employers. Work on the Nebraska side of the river falls to federal OSHA's Omaha Area Office.

  • In packing and cold storage, workers move between refrigerated rooms, wet production floors and outdoor docks many times a shift. Cold stress, wet PPE and icy dock edges are daily planning items here, not just a winter concern.

  • Large open-span buildings such as distribution centers and packing plants need an emergency action plan that names shelter areas and a headcount method for spring and summer severe-weather warnings.

Onsite Safety Training Session

Federal OSHA's Omaha Area Office, in the Lake Regency Office Building at 444 Regency Parkway Drive, covers private-sector employers throughout Nebraska. Nebraska has no State Plan for private employers, so federal standards apply directly. If you also operate in Council Bluffs or elsewhere in Iowa, those sites fall under Iowa's State Plan instead.
Most of the content carries over, since forklift, hazard communication and lockout hazards don't change at the river. We can train at both sites on the same trip. Iowa runs its own State Plan, though, and state plans can adopt standards or procedures that differ from federal OSHA, so we check the Iowa requirements for the Council Bluffs site and note any differences in your written program.
Start with hazard communication for sanitation chemicals and ammonia, lockout for the crews who clean and clear equipment, and forklift certification for cold-storage and shipping staff. Sanitation is often the riskiest shift, because guards come off and machines get cleaned under time pressure. We can observe a sanitation shift during an onsite inspection and build training around what we see there.
We travel to client sites across the Omaha metro and eastern Nebraska, including Fremont, Blair and the Sarpy County suburbs. BHG has no local office, so we schedule each visit with you in advance. For classroom-heavy courses we can also teach by live virtual session and keep the onsite time for hands-on evaluations and walkthroughs.
