Workplace Safety in Chicago

A quarter of all U.S. rail freight originates, terminates or passes through the Chicago region. All six Class I railroads operate here, and the region has 18 rail-truck intermodal terminals where cranes lift containers between railcars and chassis. Around those yards sit food and beverage plants, cold-storage warehouses and the terminals of the Port of Chicago on the Southeast Side.

That mix means a single Chicago employer can be dealing with forklifts in a freezer, ammonia refrigeration, sanitation chemicals on a processing line and trucks backing into doors, often with crews on rotating shifts and more than one language on the floor. Down on the Calumet River, port and yard crews add crane lifts, bulk stockpiles and ship and barge loading, and the rail construction program keeps contractors working next to live track.

BHG Safety Partners is based in Hannibal, Missouri. We travel to Chicago and the collar counties to train at your facility and review your written programs against what's happening on the floor. Classroom content can also be delivered by live virtual session, and hands-on evaluations happen on your own trucks, lines and equipment. Sessions can be scheduled around second and third shifts so sanitation and night crews get the same training as days.

Chicago Industries We Support

  • Food and beverage manufacturing

World Business Chicago describes Chicagoland as home to America's largest food manufacturing workforce. Processing plants bring machine-guarding and lockout hazards during sanitation, chemical exposure from cleaning agents, slippery floors and cold-environment work.

  • Rail yards and intermodal terminals

According to CMAP, a quarter of all U.S. rail freight originates, terminates or passes through the region. Yard and intermodal workers face moving equipment, crane lifts, trailer and chassis handling, and struck-by risks around trucks.

  • Port of Chicago terminals

The Illinois International Port District operates Iroquois Landing at the mouth of the Calumet River and the Lake Calumet terminal, moving bulk cargo such as lumber and mineral aggregates. Work there involves material-handling equipment, dock edges, stockpiles and loading ships and barges.

  • Rail infrastructure construction

The CREATE program, a partnership of the freight railroads, Amtrak, Metra and IDOT, keeps building grade separations, flyovers and upgraded track and signals. Contractors on those projects work beside live rail traffic, in excavations and on elevated structures.

What Shapes Safety Work in Chicago

  • Private employers in Chicago are under federal OSHA. Illinois runs a state plan, IL OSHA, but it covers only state and local government workers, such as city and county employees.

  • OSHA's directory splits Cook County between two federal area offices, Chicago North and Chicago South (Tinley Park). Check which one covers your address before assuming.

  • Lake Michigan winters mean outdoor yard, dock and construction crews need cold-stress planning and slip controls, while food plants run cold rooms year-round.

  • Illinois also runs a free OSHA On-Site Consultation Program for employers, separate from enforcement.

Federal OSHA. The Illinois state plan, run by the Illinois Department of Labor as IL OSHA, covers state and local government workers only. Private-sector employers in Chicago follow federal OSHA standards and are inspected by federal OSHA. If you employ public workers, for example as a unit of local government, IL OSHA handles those workplaces.
OSHA's Illinois directory lists Cook County under two offices: Chicago North and Chicago South, which is at 8505 W. 183rd Street in Tinley Park. The directory doesn't publish the dividing line, so confirm your specific address with OSHA. DuPage County sites go to the Naperville Area Office, and Lake County sites to Chicago North.
Yes. OSHA requires operator training plus an evaluation on the truck and in the workplace where it's used, so we come to your building. For cold storage that means covering freezer doors, frosted floors, rack aisles and pedestrian traffic at dock doors. Classroom content can be done onsite or by live virtual session before the hands-on evaluations.
We schedule sessions around your shifts, including night sanitation crews, at your plant. Sanitation is where lockout/tagout, machine guarding and chemical hazard communication overlap, so training focuses on your actual equipment, the cleaning chemicals in your SDS binder and the energy sources crews must isolate before breaking down a line.
