Workplace Safety in New Orleans

Port NOLA's container business runs through the Napoleon Avenue Container Terminal and the adjacent Mississippi River Intermodal Terminal, which handle containerized coffee, plastics, apparel and food, while its breakbulk terminals move steel, non-ferrous metals, rubber, wood and paper. Longshore and terminal crews work around gantry cranes, top loaders, rail cars and open wharf edges, often in heavy humidity.

Outside the city limits, the river is lined with process industry. Shell's Norco complex in St. Charles Parish refines crude and makes ethylene, propylene and butadiene, and Valero runs a refinery in Meraux in St. Bernard Parish. Contractors who work turnarounds and maintenance at these sites deal with process safety, hazardous materials, confined spaces and hot work permits.

BHG Safety Partners is based in Hannibal, Missouri, and has no office in Louisiana. We travel to employers in the New Orleans area for onsite training and consulting, or teach by live virtual session.

New Orleans Industries We Support

  • Port and maritime cargo

Port NOLA's terminals connect to six Class I railroads through the New Orleans Public Belt Railroad. Crane and suspended-load hazards, container handling equipment, rail switching and falls into the river are the everyday concerns.

  • Refining and petrochemicals

Refineries and chemical plants along the river in St. Charles and St. Bernard parishes bring in contractor crews for maintenance and turnarounds. Hydrogen sulfide, benzene, flammable atmospheres, confined space entry and hot work are central risks.

  • Aerospace manufacturing

NASA's Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans East, with 43 acres of manufacturing space under one roof, builds the Space Launch System core stage. Large-structure welding, work at height, overhead lifts and chemical handling come with that scale.

  • Refrigerated and perishable cargo

The Henry Clay Avenue refrigerated terminal and a refrigerated warehouse on Jourdan Road handle temperature-controlled cargo. Cold-storage work adds slippery floors, forklift operation in tight freezer aisles, and cold stress.

What Shapes Safety Work in New Orleans

  • Louisiana has no OSHA State Plan for private employers, and there is no OSHA area office in New Orleans itself. Every parish in the state, including Orleans, is covered by the Baton Rouge Area Office.

  • Hurricane season shapes the year. Hurricane Ida made landfall near Port Fourchon as a Category 4 storm on August 29, 2021, according to the National Hurricane Center. Plan for shutdown, storm prep and post-storm cleanup work, which brings chain saws, downed power lines, mold and flood-damaged structures.

  • Heat and humidity run long here. There is no federal heat standard, but OSHA uses the General Duty Clause for serious heat hazards, so wharf, refinery and roofing crews need water, rest, shade and acclimatization written into the plan.

Onsite Safety Training Session

No. OSHA's only Louisiana area office is in Baton Rouge, at 9100 Bluebonnet Centre Blvd, and it covers all 64 parishes, including Orleans, Jefferson and St. Bernard. Louisiana does not run a State Plan for private employers, so federal OSHA standards apply. If an inspector shows up at your New Orleans site, they are coming from that office.
It depends on the task. HAZWOPER (29 CFR 1910.120) applies to hazardous waste cleanup, certain treatment and storage operations, and emergency response to releases. Routine maintenance usually falls under other standards like process safety management, confined space and hot work, though many host sites set their own contractor training requirements. We can review your scope of work and tell you which training actually applies.
Yes. We come to your site anywhere in the metro, including St. Bernard and Jefferson parishes and the West Bank. Training at your facility lets us use your own permits, confined spaces and equipment as examples. We travel from Hannibal, Missouri, so visits are scheduled ahead; classroom portions can also be delivered as live virtual sessions.
Post-storm work carries its own set of hazards: chain saw use, downed and re-energized power lines, portable generator carbon monoxide, falls from damaged roofs, mold, and heat. Before the season, train crews on those tasks, confirm your PPE stock, and set up a plan for who re-enters the facility and when. A compliance audit can check that your emergency action plan matches how your site actually operates.
