Workplace Safety in Jackson

Two large plants anchor manufacturing around Jackson. Nissan's Canton Vehicle Assembly Plant in Madison County has operated since 2003, and Continental opened a commercial truck and bus tire plant near Clinton in Hinds County in 2019. Both draw in suppliers, logistics providers and maintenance contractors, and each of those employers carries its own mix of press, conveyor, robotics, forklift and chemical hazards.

Jackson is also the state capital and a regional medical center. The University of Mississippi Medical Center is the state's only academic medical center and home to its only Level I trauma center, and healthcare work brings patient handling, bloodborne pathogens, hazardous drugs and workplace violence concerns. Meanwhile, the city's water and sewer systems have been run by a federal court-appointed interim third-party manager, JXN Water, since late 2022 and repair work on mains and valves continues across the city.

BHG Safety Partners is a Disabled Veteran-Owned firm based in Hannibal, Missouri. We don't keep a Mississippi office; we travel to your site for training and consulting, and offer live virtual sessions.

Jackson Industries We Support

  • Automotive assembly and suppliers

Nissan's Canton plant covers more than 1,000 acres in Madison County. Lockout/tagout on automated lines, ergonomic strain, pinch points and industrial truck traffic are the core issues.

  • Tire manufacturing

Continental's plant near Clinton makes large truck and bus tires on a roughly 1,000-acre site. Rubber mixing and curing bring heat, rotating equipment, heavy material handling and chemical exposures.

  • Healthcare

UMMC and the other hospitals in Jackson employ large clinical and support staffs. Safe patient handling, sharps and bloodborne pathogens, and hazard communication for disinfectants and drugs are ongoing concerns.

  • Water, sewer and utility construction

JXN Water reports repairing nearly 2,000 leaks and opening 3,300 closed valves since February 2023. Trench collapse, underground utility strikes, traffic in the work zone and confined spaces such as vaults and manholes are the main hazards.

What Shapes Safety Work in Jackson

  • Mississippi is a federal OSHA state with no State Plan for private employers. The OSHA Jackson Area Office, in the federal building on West Capitol Street downtown, covers every county in the state.

  • The Pearl River floods. It crested at 36.67 feet at Jackson on February 17, 2020, the highest peak since 1983 according to the USGS, and the city ordered evacuations near the river in northeast Jackson. Sites near the river or the Ross Barnett Reservoir spillway should plan for flood shutdown and cleanup work.

  • JXN Water still posts boil-water notices when mains are repaired or pressure drops. Make sure every jobsite and plant has a reliable supply of drinking water for crews, especially in summer, when OSHA expects employers to manage heat hazards under the General Duty Clause.

The OSHA Jackson Area Office is downtown in the Dr. A.H. McCoy Federal Building at 100 West Capitol Street, Suite 749. It is Mississippi's only OSHA area office and covers private employers in every county, including Hinds, Madison and Rankin. Because Mississippi has no State Plan, federal OSHA standards apply throughout.
Trench work falls under OSHA's excavation standard, which requires a competent person on site, protective systems such as shoring or trench boxes for trenches 5 feet deep or more, and safe access and egress. Crews also need traffic control awareness and, for vaults and manholes, confined space training. OSHA 30-hour construction is a solid choice for foremen and competent persons.
Yes. We deliver training at your facility in Canton, Madison or anywhere in the metro, so operators practice on their own lines. Supplier plants typically need lockout/tagout, forklift certification, machine guarding and a written safety program that meets a customer's supplier requirements. We travel from Hannibal, Missouri, and can cover classroom content by live virtual session.
Yes. OSHA requires employers to have trained first aid responders available when there is no infirmary, clinic or hospital in near proximity to the workplace. First aid and CPR training at your Pearl, Flowood or Brandon site lets us build scenarios around your actual layout and hazards, such as heat illness on the dock or a machine injury on the floor.
