Workplace Safety in Fargo

Fargo builds heavy equipment. CNH's Fargo plant produces four-wheel-drive tractors for Case IH and New Holland and wheel loaders for CASE, in a factory that traces back to the Steiger brothers. Bobcat is headquartered in West Fargo, and John Deere Electronic Solutions designs and builds control systems in north Fargo. Welding fume, overhead cranes, press brakes, paint lines and forklift traffic are routine on these floors and in the steel shops that supply them.

The rest of the economy runs on crops. The Greater Fargo Moorhead EDC notes that Cass County is the nation's top soybean-producing county, and processors such as American Crystal Sugar, ND Soybean Processors and Dakota Specialty Milling turn beets, beans and grain into product. That work means grain dust, bins, tanks, augers and conveyors, and a workload that peaks at harvest.

North Dakota's private employers are covered by federal OSHA's Bismarck Area Office, at the other end of I-94. Moorhead, across the Red River, is in Minnesota, which runs its own State Plan. BHG Safety Partners travels from Hannibal, Missouri to train and consult at your site, and teaches classroom material by live virtual session when that suits your shifts.

Fargo Industries We Support

  • Agricultural and construction equipment manufacturing

CNH, Bobcat and John Deere anchor a cluster of assembly, machining and electronics work. The main hazards are welding and paint exposures, crane and hoist lifts of heavy frames, machine guarding and lockout, and forklift traffic in busy assembly aisles.

  • Sugar beet and oilseed processing

American Crystal Sugar processes beets in the region, and ND Soybean Processors is investing about $400 million in a new plant to produce food-grade oil. Processing plants like these combine combustible dust, confined spaces in tanks and bins, and hot process equipment.

  • Grain milling and handling

Mills and elevators serving Cass County's soybean and grain output fall under OSHA's grain handling standard. The hazards that kill people in this work are engulfment in bins, entanglement in augers and dust explosions.

  • Steel fabrication and building products

The GFMEDC lists TrueNorth Steel and Marvin among the region's manufacturers. Fabrication and millwork bring welding fume, noise, wood dust, and the struck-by and pinch-point hazards of handling long stock.

What Shapes Safety Work in Fargo

  • Fargo winters on the open Red River Valley bring long subzero stretches and hard wind chill. Plan for cold stress in yard and outdoor work, and watch carbon monoxide when propane forklifts and heaters run inside buildings closed up against the cold.

  • The Red River flows north, and spring snowmelt floods are a recurring event in Fargo-Moorhead. Flood fights mean sandbagging, pumping and levee work, often done by crews with little training for it.

  • The Fargo-Moorhead Area Diversion, a flood-risk project built with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, has drawn heavy civil work to the metro: excavation, large structures and earthmoving near live traffic.

  • Moorhead and Dilworth are in Minnesota, where MNOSHA enforces the state's own plan for private employers. A company with shops on both sides of the river answers to two different agencies.

Onsite Safety Training Session

No. Federal OSHA covers North Dakota's private employers from the Bismarck Area Office at 807 E. Main Ave., Suite B, in Bismarck. Fargo employers deal with that office for inspections, complaints and injury reporting questions. If you have a site in Moorhead or elsewhere in Clay County, Minnesota's State Plan applies there instead.
You measure it. An industrial hygiene survey puts personal air samplers on welders during normal production and compares the results with OSHA limits, including the hexavalent chromium standard that applies to stainless welding. We also check noise. You get written results by task and practical recommendations for ventilation, work practices or respirators, rather than a guess based on the welding process.
Bin entry is covered by OSHA's grain handling standard, and most tanks, pits and hoppers are permit-required confined spaces. Crews need to know the entrant, attendant and entry supervisor roles, how to lock out augers and conveyors, and how to test the atmosphere before entry. We train all three roles at your site and can review your permit program against the standards.
We travel to client sites throughout Cass County and the Minnesota side of the metro, including smaller towns such as Casselton, Kindred and Harwood. BHG is based in Hannibal, Missouri, with no local office, so we plan each visit with you. Classroom sessions can also run live online, with the hands-on portions done at your facility.
