Workplace Safety in Memphis

The Greater Memphis Chamber sums up the local economy as runway, rail, road and river. FedEx runs its global hub at Memphis International Airport. Five Class I railroads serve the city. The Port of Memphis stretches along the Mississippi on both the Tennessee and Arkansas banks, with most of its industry on President's Island. Around all of that sits a large base of warehouses and distribution centers where forklifts, conveyors and dock doors run through the night.

Tennessee runs its own OSHA-approved state plan, TOSHA, within the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development. TOSHA has a local office downtown at 40 South Main Street, and its compliance officers inspect most private workplaces in Memphis. Across the state lines in DeSoto County, Mississippi, and Crittenden County, Arkansas, federal OSHA is in charge instead.

BHG Safety Partners is based in Hannibal, Missouri, and has no Tennessee office. We travel to your site for training and audits, or teach by live virtual session. Because so much of Memphis is warehouse work, the usual needs are forklift evaluations before peak season, hazard communication reviewed against TOSHA's own standard, and audits for companies with buildings on both sides of the Tennessee-Mississippi line. Memphis Industries We Support

  • Distribution and warehousing

Next-day air access and interstate connections through I-40 and I-55 support a large warehouse and distribution market across Shelby County and into north Mississippi. Forklift and pedestrian collisions, dock-edge falls, trailer creep, conveyor caught-in hazards and heat in uncooled buildings are the most common issues.

  • Air cargo

FedEx's global hub makes Memphis International Airport one of the busiest cargo airports in the world. Ramp and sort work means tug and loader traffic, aircraft noise, lifting injuries and night shifts that make fatigue a real hazard.

  • River port and rail terminals

Port of Memphis terminals handle petroleum, cement, steel, fertilizers and grain. That brings crane and rigging work, barge and dock falls into the water, combustible grain dust, and hazardous material transfer. Rail yards add struck-by and coupling hazards.

  • Medical device manufacturing

Memphis EDGE lists Smith + Nephew, Medtronic, MicroPort Orthopedics, Stryker and Olympus among the device makers here. Precision machining of implants means machine guarding, coolant mist and noise, while cleaning, finishing and sterilization steps bring chemical exposures that need hazard communication and, where warranted, air monitoring.

What Shapes Safety Work in Memphis

  • Tennessee's state plan covers most private employers, so TOSHA compliance officers inspect Memphis workplaces. TOSHA has adopted the federal standards and must be at least as effective as federal OSHA, and it keeps some Tennessee-specific standards, including its own versions of hazard communication, sharps injury prevention and electrical rules for general industry. Train and write programs against the Tennessee versions.

  • The metro crosses three states. Warehouses in Southaven and Olive Branch fall under the federal OSHA Jackson Area Office, and sites in West Memphis fall under the federal Little Rock Area Office. A company with buildings on both sides of a state line answers to two different agencies.

  • Memphis lies near the New Madrid Seismic Zone, and the U.S. Geological Survey warns that many structures in the city are vulnerable to severe ground shaking. High-bay racking, tall stacked storage and emergency plans should account for earthquake risk as well as tornadoes.

  • Long, humid summers make heat illness a real risk on ramps, docks and in trailers and uncooled warehouses. A heat plan with water, rest, shade and acclimatization for new and returning workers is worth writing before summer peak.

Onsite Safety Training Session

No. TOSHA, Tennessee's state plan, covers most private employers in Memphis and Shelby County. Mississippi has no state plan for private employers, so your Olive Branch building falls under federal OSHA's Jackson Area Office. The core standards are largely the same, but Tennessee has some state-specific rules, including its own hazard communication standard. We can audit both buildings and flag where the Tennessee site needs something the Mississippi site does not.
Possibly. OSHA lists hazard communication among TOSHA's own standards for general industry, so a program copied from a federal template may not match Tennessee's requirements. We review your written program, chemical inventory, labels and safety data sheet access against the current Tennessee rules, then train employees on them. That matters most in port terminals, chemical distribution and device plants that handle cleaners, solvents and sterilants.
Start with what can hurt them in the first week: forklift and pedestrian traffic rules, dock and trailer safety, conveyor lockout basics, heat illness and emergency exits. Anyone who will drive a powered industrial truck must be trained and evaluated under 29 CFR 1910.178(l) before operating. For supervisors and long-term hires, OSHA 10-Hour General Industry gives a broader base. We can run short, repeatable sessions at your building to keep pace with hiring.
Yes. We travel to sites across Shelby County, including Collierville, Germantown, Bartlett and Millington, and into DeSoto County and West Memphis. Training and audits happen at your facility so we can look at your actual docks, racking and equipment. Classroom topics can also be delivered by live virtual session for employees on other shifts.
