Workplace Safety in St. Louis
St. Louis work runs on a mix you don't see in many metros: military aircraft built for Boeing's defense programs, barges loading grain and bulk materials along the riverfront, and plants making beverages, chemicals and pharmaceuticals. Each of those operations carries its own hazards, and each needs training built around its own equipment and chemicals.
BHG Safety Partners is based upriver in Hannibal, and we travel to St. Louis City, St. Louis County and the surrounding counties to train crews and review programs at the client's facility or job site. We also run live virtual sessions for classroom portions when that fits a shift schedule better. Hands-on pieces, like forklift evaluations or confined-space entry walkthroughs, happen on your own equipment so crews practice where they work.
Contractors on Missouri public works have a specific obligation here. State law requires a 10-hour OSHA construction course for on-site employees, and public bodies can withhold penalties from contract payments when workers lack it. Workers have 60 days from their start on the project to finish it. We help contractors plan that training before mobilization, and keep completion records organized so nobody is scrambling when the public body asks for documentation.
St. Louis Industries We Support
Aerospace and defense manufacturing
Greater St. Louis, Inc. counts about 18,000 people in regional aerospace manufacturing, with Boeing building the T-7A trainer, MQ-25 and F/A-18 Super Hornet and producing 777X composite parts. That work means composite dust and resin exposure, overhead cranes, fall hazards on aircraft stands and lockout on large machining centers.
Mississippi River barge terminals
The Port of Metropolitan St. Louis runs 70 miles along both banks with 15 barge-transfer facilities, and the city's Municipal River Terminal handles grain, coal, scrap metal and minerals. Crews face drowning risk, mooring-line and winch injuries, conveyor entanglement and combustible grain dust.
Beverage, chemical and pharmaceutical production
The St. Louis Regional Freightway lists beverages, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, detergents and petroleum products among the region's strongest concentrations. Those plants call for solid hazard communication, confined-space entry procedures for tanks and vessels, and control of forklift traffic in high-volume packaging areas.
Distribution and logistics
The Freightway calls transportation, distribution and logistics one of the region's highest-growth clusters. Warehouse and cross-dock operations bring powered industrial truck incidents, dock-edge falls and struck-by hazards in trailer yards.
What Shapes Safety Work in St. Louis
Missouri is a federal OSHA state. The St. Louis Area Office covers St. Louis City and St. Louis, St. Charles, Jefferson and Franklin counties, among others in eastern Missouri.
Section 292.675 RSMo requires contractors and subcontractors on public works to give on-site employees a 10-hour OSHA construction course, completed within 60 days of starting work. The penalty is $2,500 plus $100 per untrained employee per day, withheld from the contract.
The Metro East side of the river falls under a different office: OSHA lists St. Clair, Madison and Monroe counties in Illinois under its Fairview Heights Area Office, so a firm working both banks deals with two federal area offices.
Missouri's free On-Site Consultation Program, run separately from enforcement, is another resource for small employers alongside private consulting.
